April is National Volunteer Month and is meant to recognize those who give of their time, skills and energy to support different causes, helping others. In honor of the month, Blue Yonder associate Ellie Hislop shares her experience volunteering with a nonprofit dedicated to introducing more women to the game of golf.

One area where I’m especially passionate about advancing gender equality is by increasing accessibility and inclusivity for women and minorities in golf. The sport has long carried a reputation for being elite, exclusive and intimidating – and at times, it can live up to that perception. That’s why it’s so important for women and other aspiring golfers to develop the confidence, strategies and sense of belonging they need to fully enjoy the game – because they absolutely do belong on the course.

Through my involvement with Fore the Ladies, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and female-based community, I’ve seen firsthand the power of community and representation in making golf more welcoming. Their mission is to make golf more accessible and approachable by removing traditional barriers like cost, intimidation and access. Whether through beginner-friendly clinics, social events or mentorship opportunities, they’re creating spaces for women to experience all that golf has to offer – at their own pace, in supportive environments.

One of my favorite moments from this past year was our season-ending event in New York City this past September – a happy hour 9-hole round where women of all ability levels came together to play, learn from each other, and build friendships. These kinds of experiences not only grow the game but also foster a sense of belonging and confidence for those who may not otherwise feel comfortable picking up a club.

As part of National Volunteer Month, I’d encourage anyone looking to get more involved to think about the spaces you already love being in – the sports you enjoy, the communities you’re a part of – and look for opportunities to bring purpose into those places. I’ve found that combining something you love with something that gives back makes it easier to create a consistent and joyful rhythm for volunteering in your life.

Blue Yonder offers two Volunteer Time Off days annually, and associates are encouraged to utilize these days to support meaningful causes of their choice.
