Once again Nucleus Research has named Blue Yonder a Leader in its recently published WMS Technology Value Matrix 2024. This annual report offers an overview of the current market for warehouse management systems (WMS), examines trends, and assesses the software providers in this space. Among 20 software providers, Blue Yonder Warehouse Management solution was ranked farthest on the “functionality” axis of the Value Matrix.

Blue Yonder shares this recognition with the hundreds of customers who use our WMS solution every day to increase speed, accuracy and efficiency — delivering better service, while also driving out costs. These customers include Accel, Americold, Arcadia Cold, City Plumbing, Clipper Logistics, Driscolls, HappyFresh, Henkel, Medifast, Pacific Star, Prinsel, Seedcom Logistics, Silk Logistics, SodaStream, Rhenus Logistics and other companies.

Mastering complexity: A key warehouse challenge

It’s no secret that warehouse operations are becoming more complex, fast-paced and demanding every day, as logistics teams balance growing customer expectations, rising costs, flexible omni-channel fulfillment needs, sustainability targets and other demands. In his introduction to the WMS Technology Value Matrix 2024 report, author Charles A. Brennan noted this complexity — and the unique pressure it’s placing on software providers. He wrote, “Supply chain customers demand warehouse management systems (WMS) that meet complex requirements, automate repetitive tasks, and offer actionable insights. They want solutions that scale as needed, incorporate robotics, and use AI for decision support.”

With system-directed activities and embedded intelligence established over decades of customer-centric development, Blue Yonder WMS solution is purpose-built to master warehouse complexity. Over the years, we’ve strategically expanded the solution to address emerging, real-world customer needs. We believe that’s why the Nucleus Research report positions Blue Yonder farthest on the “functionality” axis.

In Brennan’s analysis of Blue Yonder specifically, he cited these key capabilities of our WMS solution that help companies master the complexity of modern distribution operations:

  • Automating key processes such as put-away, cross-docking and inventory tracking
  • Optimizing operations by prioritizing tasks based on real-time data
  • Increasing visibility and control over inventory via real-time tracking
  • Orchestrating outbound activities like picking, routing, packaging and load-building
  • Optimizing labor via workload forecasting, goal setting, tasking and productivity tracking
  • Managing multiple robotic systems through a unified interface, Robotics Hub

Brennan also noted Blue Yonder’s strategic acquisitions and outlined ways in which recent acquisitions complement Blue Yonder’s WMS. The report highlighted how the recent acquisitions of flexis, One Network and Doddle contributed to improvements in Blue Yonder’s warehouse management value proposition.

The value of an integrated, platform-based approach

Brennan emphasized the increasing importance of a platform approach as one way to master complexity.

“In response to…evolving customer priorities, vendors are creating integrated supply chain management and execution platforms that enable customers to coordinate all aspects of their supply chain, from planning to execution and vice versa,” Brennan wrote. “To create an all in-one supply chain offering, WMS software providers acquire or partner with supply chain planning (SCP), order management and transportation management software providers.”

A key advantage of Blue Yonder is our broad capabilities that span the supply chain, creating an end-to-end solution for supply chain requirements — without the need for outside partnerships. In fact, Blue Yonder is recognized as a Leader in Nucleus Research Value Matrix reports that focus on Supply Chain Planning (SCP), Transportation Management, Control Tower and Workforce Management.

By bringing these solutions together on the Blue Yonder Platform, logistics teams can create an integrated digital ecosystem in which warehouse operations are directly connected with other functions. Because the entire supply chain shares the same data and real-time visibility, it can pivot in a synchronized manner when plans are updated. This gives warehouse teams, and other functions, an incredible competitive edge in responding to demand changes, extreme weather, material or labor shortages, and other disruptions. By using an integrated platform to bridge historically siloed supply chain teams and processes, Blue Yonder helps customers achieve increased efficiencies, faster responsiveness, improved service levels and higher margins.

Blue Yonder’s flexibility increases agility

Another benefit of Blue Yonder Platform-based approach? Warehouse teams can easily extend their solution with advanced capabilities as composable microservices that integrate quickly and seamlessly with their existing Blue Yonder and third-party solutions. Configurable software, workflows and extensibility are competitive differentiators that allow Blue Yonder customers to easily adapt to change and achieve a high degree of self-reliance. Brennan pointed out the value of this approach in introducing his findings. “Some WMS vendors now offer low-code/no-code capabilities, enabling users to customize workflows and build integrations without extensive technical expertise,” he wrote. “This flexibility allows companies to quickly adapt their warehouse processes to changing needs…without lengthy development cycles. With low code/no-code tools, warehouse teams can configure and scale their systems independently.”

In his analysis, Brennan specifically called out the agility of Blue Yonder’s warehouse execution system as a key advantage for users. Said Brennan, “Blue Yonder’s warehouse execution system…optimizes warehouse work by incorporating information regarding due dates, resource capabilities, and the physical location of inventory to orchestrate tasks to available resources. It employs bidirectional prioritization to direct resources and tasks as warehouse conditions change throughout the day.”

Both warehouse execution and Yard Management are delivered as cloud-native microservices that can easily be added to a customer’s Blue Yonder footprint. This flexible approach is just another way Blue Yonder is helping customers manage the growing complexity of warehouse operations — and extend their digital capabilities as market conditions change or new technology innovations emerge.
