Each year, National Relaxation Day takes place on Aug. 15. In honor of the day, Rahul Vyas, Ph.D., a Lead on Blue Yonder’s Learning & Development team, shares a personal poem and his insights into how you can best relax.
A pause, a breath, a tranquil space,
Amid the frantic rush of life’s grand race,
Relaxation is nothing but a soothing grace.
In the whirlwind of demands and toil, A moment’s respite, a tranquil coil.
Beneath the starlit sky’s vast foil, Relaxation’s balm begins to uncoil.
Eyes closed, let worries softly fade, In the stillness, a symphony is played.
A gentle rhythm, a melody swayed, Relaxation’s magic, fears are allayed.
Release the tension that binds your soul, let every worry and burden be stole.
In the hush, you’re again made whole, Relaxation’s currents, they console.
Amid the chaos, let tranquility bloom, like wildflowers breaking through gloom.
In relaxation’s sweet, silent room, Life’s essence shines, dispelling doom.
So, seek the heaven where serenity lies, where time slows down and the soul flies.
In relaxation’s embrace, wisdom belies, A moment’s treasure, a heartfelt prize.
Often, we say yes to others‘ demands while saying no to our own needs. Commitment to self involves prioritizing our own needs and desires, not as a selfish act, but as a necessary one for our overall well-being.
In essence, committing to self in the midst of life’s rush is a declaration that our well-being matters. It’s an active choice to prioritize self-love, self-respect, and self-discovery, which ultimately enables us to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and grace.
Whether it’s taking a few moments to practice deep breathing, going for a nature walk, enjoying a leisurely meal with family or friends, or simply curling up with a good book, National Relaxation Day encourages us to embrace relaxation and celebrate the importance of self-care and connection.
Putting a pause to the rush of life involves intentionally slowing down and taking a break from the fast-paced nature of modern living. This pause allows us to reconnect with ourselves, recharge our energy, and find a sense of balance in the midst of life’s demands.
I describe this intentional slowing down or the pause in the rush of life as the “blue hour” — an enchanting and fleeting period at dawn and dusk when the sky takes on a captivating blue hue. This magical moment occurs when the sun is just below the horizon, either before sunrise or after sunset. During this time, the sky transitions from the vibrant colors of daylight to the deeper shades of night, resulting in a soothing and almost otherworldly blue shade that often brings about feelings of peace and enchantment.
It’s a moment when the natural light creates a serene atmosphere, visually calming and emotionally uplifting for moments of relaxation, introspection, contemplation, and the appreciation of beauty. Whether you’re using it for relaxation, personal reflection, or creative expression, „the blue hour“ provides a special opportunity to slow down, savor the beauty of transition, and find tranquillity in a world that often rushes past us.
Slowing down for relaxation in a world that often rushes by holds significant benefits for our overall well-being and quality of life. In today’s fast-paced society, where technological advancements and societal pressures push us to constantly be on the go, the act of intentionally slowing down to relax can be transformative.
Some of the key benefits of intentionally slowing down to relax are as follows.
- Reconnection With Self: An opportunity to reconnect with our authentic selves and engage in self-reflection.
- Deeper Connections With Others: Rushing through life can hinder our ability to connect deeply with others. Slowing down allows us to be fully present in conversations and interactions, fostering more meaningful relationships, and a stronger sense of community.
- Enhanced Listening: When we are relaxed, we tend to be more attentive and present in conversations. This active listening encourages a deeper understanding of the other person’s perspectives, thoughts and emotions, which in turn strengthens the connection.
- Empathy: Relaxation can help us become more attuned to the emotions and needs of others. This heightened empathy allows us to better understand each other’s experiences and respond with empathy, which fosters deeper connections.
- Conflict Resolution: In a relaxed state, we are more likely to approach conflicts with a calm and rational mindset. This enables productive discussions and collaborative problem-solving, leading to stronger relationships.
- Enhanced Awareness and Creativity: Enables us to appreciate the subtle details, textures and nuances of life that we might overlook when rushing. This can lead to a greater sense of presence, mindfulness and quietness – a perfect ingredient for creativity to flourish.
- Reduced Stress and Improved Mental Health: Allows us to break free from the constant pressure to achieve, meet deadlines, and keep up with the demands of modern life. This helps reduce anxiety and alleviate the mental strain that often accompanies a hectic pace. This, in turn, can contribute to better mental clarity, focus, and emotional well-being.
Ultimately, slowing down to relax isn’t about being unproductive or lazy; it’s about creating a balanced rhythm that honors our need for rest, reflection and genuine engagement with life. It’s an intentional choice to live more fully and authentically in a world that often values speed over depth.
So, what are you waiting for?
